Week 14: WebQuest

I worked with Melissa Bratton as partners for our project in which we created a webquest using seamonkey. We worked together to decide on a topic, how to teach that topic, and then find an interesting yet informative way in which to present it. THe title of our webquest was "THe correct way to shoot freethrows." In this presentation we teach the correct way to shoot freethrows, in which we describe the "beef" process.
During this activity I realized that working in groups can lead to better projects because two individual's ideas are collaborated and enhanced. There was also preperation in whcih we had to do on our own such as how we would present our part to the class. I liked working with a oartner with new software the best because it helped me to not bog down, and brought light to a startegy of using groups to present new material.

Lesson Plan

Our Country and It’s Presidents

Lesson planned for: September 20, 2050

Grade Level
This lesson is designed for students grades 4-6, and parts of the lesson could be used as warm-ups for upper level classes such as seventh and eighth grade social studies students.

Subject
This lesson is best suited for an American History class, but the information contained could prove beneficial to any history class across the board/

Duration
This lesson is intended to last for one fifty minute class period, so it is a lesson that is designed in hopes of leaving a small amount of important information concerning all the United States presidents.

Objectives
· Memorization of U.S. Presidents
· Associate Inaugural years
· Understanding of Key Terms and Actions

Material Aid
The material aid that I have created to accompany this lesson is a worksheet that requires students to associate Inaugural years with the correct president and also requires them to write a reflection concerning their favorite president. This material aid should provide students with something tangible to put their hands on and understand the numerous presidents our country has had.

Technology Use
Technology will make its’ presence in this lesson through compact discs and headphones to use the musical program that helps students memorize the presidents by a song that recalls each presidents last name in the order in which they were president. For example, the song begins Washington, Adams, Jackson, Van Buren…..

Procedure
This lesson is one in which requires the students to break into three groups: technology, board game (Passionate Presidents), and a discussion with the teacher in which highlights of presidents and their actions are discussed. After breaking into groups the lesson is fairly self-explanatory as each group will spend 10 minutes at each station. After 3o minutes of groups the teacher should bring the class back together and require that each student free-write for 5 minutes about what they have learned in the lesson. If this procedure is followed in an energetic way I believe that students will leave with a better grasp on the country and its’ presidents.

Assessment/Evaluation
I will access the lesson with the material aid that I have created. I have hopes that the students will be able to have an idea of the inaugural years and a favorite president. I think this worksheet creates a challenge for the students and results are decided. This evaluation expresses the knowledge the students leave the lesson with.

CHP 8

What makes for engaging and effective design challenge is a sense of competetion betweent he students. There are many different ways of design such as writing and computer software, but also the students are not limited because their creativity is the only thing to hold them back. 1. Identify a need or oppurtunity, 2. Generate a design, 3. Plan and make a solution, 4. Evaluate and reflect on solution. (pg. 170)

The first way to keep students interested is to allow them to work on things that serve as a particular interest to the student. This is the most important thought in conjunction with keeping students researching on ways to improve their skills. The text speaks of iStopMotion which is a piece of technology that makes students want to desing even more.

Teachers act as designers for sure when they are constructing their lesson plans. Lesson plans are a design that is important to the class everyday. Teachers are desginers in how they may produce the lecture such as with a power point presentation. Techaers use desinging everyday, and it is important that this be a skill that each teacher can maximize the oppurtunity. YEs teachers do revise after teaching because they know what did and did not work and so on. And yes teachers can find ideas in tectbooks and incorporate it into their class as they see fit, just as a way to improve the success in their classroom.

MIDTERM REACTIONS

After taking the midterm I guess it was about right. All the questions were relevant to the material and not strange because I had seen them when I studied. The hard part about the test was that the questions were open-ended so no right or wrong answer seemed justified. I like this sort of test generally I just hope that I did not take the questions correctly. Anyways I was pleased with the test and feel like I did fine.

After looking at the power point rules I think they are relevant to our presentations. Most of the rules are common sense, but likewise it is important to remeber them while presenting. A couple of the rules serve as great tips and reminders as we get ready to present next week. I will use these in my time next week, and I expect that this incororation of material will help to improve my grade as well.

Week 7

Teachers should try and use some of the technology that the students use because it will make the lessons more interesting for the student. At the same time it is important to remember that you are the teacher and all the material you plan to cover must be presented in the way in which you can.

I think that instant messaging and online chats add to the learning environment because the students enjoy this time, and also can share their thoughts about the material which will lead to better learning.

The primary benefit of text communication over face to face communication is being able to review what was discussed. The information is only a click away and the student is not responsible for keeping up with everything.

I think that podcasts are just a new way because I do not think they are any more effective than online chats. I think these lectures should be int he classroom.

Video games can be effective, but too much can also be harmful. Coordination and literacy skills can be gained through video games. If I had kids I would allow them to play daily because when they finsish their business they deserve some fun.

Reaction to Activities

I thought that the activities this week went really well. i enjoyed making the brochure because I think it really would be nice to pass these out on the first day of classes. At first it was tough to create the brochure, but after playing with the assignment I think I did a pretty good job. I enjoyed putting the pictures ont there, and I think they help show my personality. I really enjoyed this weeks activities. As far as a muddy point, I think maybe a little more work with the spreadsheet but I really do not know.

I really like Desktop Publishing. I took Dp in high school and we really made a lot of cool things. The resumes and brochures are awesome, but there are so many things that can be done on this software. It really is amazing! I think it allows you to have a lot of fun and make lots of items. I think that we could also make business cards to ahve to pass out, and put some sort of clip art that is relevant. I think this would be cool for teachers to have. If i could make one thing on desktop publishing for my classroom I would for sure make brochures. I really liked it, because of it's appearance and the amount of information it can hold. Brochures are my favorite thing for the classroom for sure. Desktop publishing allows you to create many things, and it is a lot of fun.

SPREADSHEET Q'S

I think that the spreadsheet is an awesome tool for the teacher. It is basically just a grid that can perform claculations in numerous cells and rows. It is very useful because it allows the teacher to get the results for a students average, a class's tests average, as well as many other commands. It allows the teacher to work far more quickly and with fewer errors. I would certainly use it in my classroom because it is very helpful. It makes the gradebook far less stressul, and I know I will always have it in my bag of tricks.

As a teacher the most useful reason for using it is the gradebook. As I have alrady mentioned it allows the teacher to perform many calculations with one click of the mouse. Another reason is for problem solving reasons, and to construct some worksheet that are relevant to the topica t sudy. It is much better than using a calculator because it can calculate the entire classrooms results far quicker. I think that the three preimary sources are vert helpful. I do have another function whcihis a planner. It would look much like a calendar but would have a space for assignments and due dates. I think that this would help each student be acountable.
